Some of the Boston area's best bagels come from an unlikely source in Bagel Rising. While not a deli or a Jewish restaurant, Bagel Rising is indeed a place that makes outstanding kettle-boiled bagels that are both airy and fresh. In addition to the main store in Allston, their bagels can be purchased at any of the several Espresso Royales located in Boston.

Bova's Bakery

Mike's and Modern Pastry may get most of the press, but Bova's Bakery is well worth going to while in the North End, not only for their pastries and breads, but also for their calzones and pizza. And if you are a night owl, Bova's is actually open 24 hours a day.

Iggy's Bread of the World

Located in an out-of-the-way part of West Cambridge in the heart of the city's industrial area, Iggy's Bread of the World is a must for people who love different types of bread. In addition to their bread, Iggy's also makes pizza and bagels, both of which are excellent.

Joseph's Bakery

Old-school to the core, Joseph's Bakery is a favorite among Southie locals as well as others on the South Shore who know about this hidden gem. From their danish and muffins to their lobster tails, eclairs, cream puffs, and rum cakes, Joseph's has something to satisfy nearly everyone.

Spinelli's

A large pastry shop located in the Day Square section of East Boston, Spinelli's has the feel of a North End shop without the parking hassles. In addition to pastries, cakes, pies, and Italian cookies, Spinelli's also has pizza, calzones, and pasta for sale.

Danish Pastry House

One of the few places in New England that specializes in Danish treats, the Danish Pastry House is a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea and some marzipan-flavored goodies on a rainy afternoon. Located just down the street from Tufts University on the Medford/Somerville line, the Danish Pastry House is a popular spot for college students.

Fisichelli's Pastry Shop

Perhaps one of the most "hidden" of all the pastry shops and bakeries on this list, Fisichelli's Pastry Shop is an old-fashioned place that reflects the Italian heritage of the area just east and north of downtown Lawrence. Fisichelli's specializes in Italian cookies, cakes, and cannolis that are filled on the spot.

Heavenly Donuts

Most donuts are admittedly heavenly, but the ones made at Heavenly Donuts are perhaps just a bit more heavenly than your average donuts (hence the name of the place). Located just off of Route 495 near the Lawrence line, Heavenly Donuts is easy to get to for folks who live or work in the Merrimack Valley.

La Cascia's Bakery and Deli

An old-school bakery in an old-fashioned part of Medford, La Cascia's Bakery and Deli is perhaps known best for its delicious squares of Sicilian pizza. But La Cascia's has much more than pizza--locals come here frequently for their cakes, breads, pastries, cheeses, and cold cuts, as well as their soups, salads, subs, and calzones.

Lyndell's Bakery

If you have a hankering for cupcakes or half moons (also known to many as black and white cookies), Lyndell's Bakery is for you. Home of some of the best half moons in the Boston area (and indeed some of the best cupcakes, too), Lyndell's is a dessert-lover's dream.

Athan's Bakery

A bit more upscale than most of the places mentioned here, the European-feeling Athan's has reasonably prices items and is certainly a great place to go for anyone who likes sweets. Athan's specializes in tortes, tarts, and all things chocolate, including homemade chocolates and hand-rolled truffles.

Gail Ann Coffee Shop

Gail Ann's has been around for a long, long time, and still puts out some outstanding donuts, including a delicious (and rather sinful) chocolate jimmy donut. Located just around the corner from Mass. Ave. in Arlington Center, Gail Ann's is just enough off the beaten path to remain unknown to many.

Kupel's

Not everyone likes Kupel's donuts, but the place certainly does have its legion of admirers. The bagels here tend to be a bit like ones you might find in New York City, and are quite a bit bigger than your typical chain bagel. In addition to bagels, this Jewish bakery also has a decent supply of pastries.

Linda's Donuts

After all these years, Linda's remains one of the best places in the Boston area for donuts. This old-fashioned spot, which is located near the Watertown line, has all kinds of freshly made donuts, including a particularly good honey dipped. Other items are also offered at Linda's, including eggs for breakfast and soups and sandwiches for lunch.

Sevan Bakery

Located in the heavily Armenian neighborhood of East Watertown, Sevan Bakery features a variety of Armenian, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern foods. A popular item at Sevan is the lahmejune, which is a kind of Armenian pizza. Sevan also offers a number of different kinds of breads as well as products used for cooking.

Aroma Bakery

Aroma Bakery, which is located just east of Route 18 on the way to Hingham and Route 3, may not be very well known, but for those who frequent the place, it is known as a spot for excellent Italian pastries. Some of their specialties include Italian cookies, biscotti, cannolis, ricotta pie, and eclairs.

Fratelli's Pastry Shop

Owned by two brothers from Italy, Fratelli's is a popular local bakery located just east of Quincy Center that features all kinds of goodies. Fratelli's offers more than 100 homemade goods, including cakes, pies, and muffins, as well as pastries of all kinds.

Ginger Betty's

It's (almost) all about gingerbread at Ginger Betty's--gingerbread houses, gingerbread men, women, children, etc. This little spot, which is located between Wollaston Beach and Quincy Center, has been a favorite among locals for 15 years now, not just for their ginger products, but also for their pastries, cakes, pies, and coffee.

Konditor Meister

If you are in need of a cake, Konditor Meister should probably be at or near the top of your list. This European pastry shop which is located near the Braintree Split features cakes for all occasions, including weddings, parties, and business events. They also offer a number of pastries, pies, and cookies as well.

O'Brien's Bakery

Formerly an old-school neighborhood place in Wollaston, and now in a new home near where South Quincy and West Quincy meet (just northwest of the Quincy Adams T station), O'Brien's is a longtime favorite that features cakes, pastries, and Irish goods, including both soda bread and brown bread.
