Monte Cristo

(From Our Glossary Feature)

A monte cristo is a sandwich that has layers of meat and cheese packed inside two or three pieces of toast. Ham and turkey are usually used for meats in a monte cristo, and swiss cheese is commonly used. French toast with powdered sugar is occasionally the bread of choice for a monte cristo, though the entire sandwich is often dipped in egg batter instead. Some restaurants serve the sandwich with a side of maple syrup for dipping.
