The historic hamlet of Chester, Connecticut is nestled in a deep valley in the south central part of the state. It has a European feel to it, complete with narrow, winding lanes, small independent shops, and a twisting stream that runs through the center. Along this stream sits the Pattaconk 1850 Bar & Grille, a creaky old tavern that has a charm found in fewer and fewer places these days. The Pattaconk caters mostly to locals from the Chester area as well as those coming from the nearby Goodspeed Opera House. People of all kinds can be found at this charming restaurant, from aging hippies to tough-looking bikers to sweater-wearing country club members to middle-class families. A terrific jukebox livens up the pub area of the Pattaconk, while the back room is quieter and has a bucolic view of the stream.
Patrons of the Pattaconk 1850 Bar & Grille can choose between above-average pub food (sandwiches, nachos, and so on) and more upscale restaurant entrees. The burgers and fries at the Pattaconk are particularly fine, and the beer selection is better than most.
Chester is a short distance southeast of Hartford, and only a few miles north of Route 95, making the Pattaconk a perfect stopping point for a meal on the way to New York City from Boston (or vice versa). But be careful; you might not want to leave once you discover the many charms of Chester and the Pattaconk 1850 Bar & Grille.
