Restaurant Takeout Mini-Review: Spazio Restaurant and Bar in Braintree

Upscale Italian Food To-Go on the South Shore.

photo of sausage dish from Spazio in Braintree, MALast week, Governor Charlie Baker ordered that all restaurants in Massachusetts be closed except for takeout and/or delivery due to the Coronavirus outbreak, and this week, he issued a stay-at-home advisory that does not affect the earlier ruling, so restaurants are able to remain keep serving to-go food to people. All of this is causing many dining spots to quickly shift focus, and in some cases, forcing places to concentrate on takeout/delivery for the first time. One such spot that isn't exactly a takeout spot is Spazio Restaurant and Bar, a casual upscale Italian restaurant in Braintree, and a restaurant that we recently returned to more than 10 years after last going there. And based on the "takeout" food we tried from the eatery, Spazio seems to have done a good job moving into the mostly unfamiliar world of full-time takeout.

photo of fried calamari from Spazio in Braintree, MAThe last time we went to Spazio, it was pretty impressive overall, with a cozy yet modern feel to the place and very good food for the most part, with one of the few complaints being that it was just a tad loud in the dining area. Well, since that no longer has any relevance--at least for now--it was all about the food this time around, though also the service, including seeing how they have settled into the world of takeout, and based on the quickness of our order, the folks here seem to be doing a terrific job, and as is the case seemingly everywhere now, they were incredibly appreciative of everyone doing to-go orders while we were waiting for our food. And the food itself was wonderful, with the fried calamari being perfectly breaded and not being greasy at all; the Italian bread coming with a tremendous garlic spread; the sweet sausage with broccoli rabe, orecchiette, and garlic oil being about as good a dish as you'll find, takeout or no takeout; and the penne pasta with tomato cream sauce, speck, mushrooms, onions, and fontaina cheese being a pasta dish that more restaurants really should offer. Unlike most other New England states, Massachusetts is not allowing beer or wine to be sold with takeout orders (although that could soon change), so we had to open our own bottle of wine, which was perfectly fine, reminding me of those restaurants without liquor licenses that allow you to bring your own.

Oddly enough, the food at Spazio this time around seemed a little better than our last experience there, which is really impressive considering takeout by its very nature shouldn't be as good as freshly-made meals served right out of the kitchen. It seems to indicate that once this shutdown ends, this little-known spot between Weymouth Landing and the Quincy line may be worth trying out for some of its other food options.

The address for Spazio is 200 Quincy Avenue, Braintree, MA, 02184. The phone number is (781) 849-1577.
